Vanessa Buie is a current general surgery resident at the University of Chicago Medicine, currently completing two years of dedicated research as well as an MBA degree at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Vanessa started the MD/APP-in-Room button initiative and oversaw the pilot implementation on the first unit.

With pressures to improve hospital efficiency, reduce length of stay and decrease readmissions, effective communication among care teams is more important than ever. Improved physician-nurse communication is associated with improved patient experience, outcomes, and staff engagement.
