Tara Schapmire, PhD, MSSW, OSW-C, FAOSW serves on the faculty of the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine and the Kent School of Social Work. Dr. Schapmire’s research interests include psychosocial care of cancer survivors and their families, gerontology, palliative care, survivorship and inter-professional education. She is co-investigator on an NIH project to develop a critical mass of competent equipped oncology educators skilled in the development and implementation of IPE for palliative oncology care. She is co-investigator on two HRSA grants aimed at development of an interprofessional gerontology curriculum for learners in medicine, nursing, social work, dentistry, and pharmacy.

The Interprofessional Education Exchange (iPEX) project provides training and mentoring in the development of interprofessional palliative education in oncology to select faculty teams from institutions across the nation. Eight teams are selected annually based on a competitive application process. Each team must have representatives from at least three disciplines. Disciplines represented have included chaplaincy, medicine, music therapy, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and social work.
