The Development and Implementation of a Two-Tier IPE Integration at UW-Madison - Lessons Learned
Background: The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (UW CIPE) is a University Center that was established in 2016 by, and since then supported by the University Health Sciences Leadership Council (the UW Provost Office, and the Deans of the four health sciences schools - School of Medicine and Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy and School of Veterinary Medicine). Design: The UW CIPE established its first 5-year Strategic Directions in 2019. The Vision includes “transforming health care through interprofessional practice, education, and research”, and the Mission is “to work collaboratively locally, nationally and globally to champion, integrate, and advance Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE) to achieve the Quadruple Aim: better health, better care, better value, and better work experience”. Results: To achieve the Vision and Mission, four Strategic Priorities were identified: Education, Scholarship, Partnership and Sustainability. As part of the Education Strategic Priority, a Two-Tier Integration System, including a seamless integration of IPE into all curricula; and a student IPE Portfolio, is deemed necessary to ensure collaborative practice-ready graduates. Conclusion & Reflections: A number of initiatives are being developed and implemented in this Two-Tier IPE Integration System, including but not limited to: IPE Gap Analysis, IPE Designation Criteria, IPE Badge Certificate Program, IPE Professional Development Program, and IPE Paths of Distinction. A coordinated engaging and supportive approach using four core strategies, including: collaborative leadership, engagement and partnerships, evolvement, and capacity building are being employed to ensure successful and sustainable IPE integration at the University of Wisconsin.
