Dr. Benjamin Gilmer is a family physician and Assistant Professor at the UNC School of Medicine/MAHEC Family Medicine Residency Program. As the Medical Director for the Kenan Primary Care Medical Scholars, he advocates for global and rural health disparities, while advancing medical education as the FM Clerkship director at the UNC SOM Asheville campus and the MAHEC FM Residency Program. His advocacy work focuses on the social injustice of treating mental illness in our prison system, and global health in rural Honduras. He serves on the board for the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.

In response to experiential rotation disruptions caused by "stay at home" orders related to COVID 19, an interprofessional team of faculty representing medicine, pharmacy, public health and clinical administration came together and quickly designed and launched an interprofessional rotation. This interprofessional rotation offered participants the opportunity to engage in local and regional preparedness and healthcare delivery elements for COVID-19.
