Danielle Furgeson is Director of the Graduate Dental Hygiene Program at the University of the Michigan School of Dentistry in Ann Arbor, MI. Her research focuses on IPE/IPC, and has been an Interprofessional Leaders Fellow at the University of Michigan. Her recent work includes the development of an online interprofessional course for graduate nursing, dental hygiene and social work students. She also maintains active clinical practice in the Periodontics & Oral Medicine Faculty Practice.

Background: Effectiveness of using interprofessional health care teams to improve patient health outcomes and access to care has been well researched, but barriers to provider participation in interprofessional collaboration (IPC) still exist. For example, stereotypes or misconceptions of other team member’s level of academic degree (associate, bachelors, masters, doctorate) may influence the provider’s attitude toward participation in IPC.
