Elena Umland, PharmD, FNAP, is Associate Provost for Interprofessional Practice and Education, Co-Director of the Jefferson Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU). She is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor in the Jefferson College of Pharmacy at TJU. Dr. Umland is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (B.S. and PharmD) and completed a Primary Care Pharmacy Practice Residency at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA. She began her academic career in 1996 at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and joined TJU in 2007. She is the 2011 recipient of the James B. Erdmann Award for Excellence in Interprofessional Education. Her scholarly activity has focused on interprofessional education via collaboration. Under her leadership, JCIPE has been awarded honorable mention for the 2019 George E. Thibault, MD Nexus Award by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education as well as honorable mention in behavioral health for the USPHS/IPEC 2020 Excellence in Interprofessional Education Collaboration National Award.

Background: Faculty face time constraints and, in some cases, limited training and experience that can hinder their efforts to publish scholarly research. Nevertheless, the 2015 IOM report was a “call to action” for more robust research and scholarship to advance the interprofessional education (IPE) field.
