Mark Pfeifer, MD is a practicing internist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville. He holds the V.V. Cooke Endowed Chair of Medicine. His clinical and academic endeavors focus on advanced illness and palliative care including symptom management, end-of-life communication and decisions, and interprofessional practice and education. He has been Principal Investigator on three NIH grants, served nationally as a permanent member of two NCI Study Sections and locally as Senior Associate Vice President, Interim Dean, Chief of Staff, and Chief Medical Officer.

The Interprofessional Education Exchange (iPEX) project provides training and mentoring in the development of interprofessional palliative education in oncology to select faculty teams from institutions across the nation. Eight teams are selected annually based on a competitive application process. Each team must have representatives from at least three disciplines. Disciplines represented have included chaplaincy, medicine, music therapy, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and social work.
