Vani Patterson earned a Masters of Public Health from the University of Michigan with a focus on Human Nutrition. With Michigan Medicine’s Adolescent Health Initiative, she provided consultation to health care teams nationally to improve patient-centered care for adolescents. In witnessing the quick and profound impact of collaborative care in the practice setting, Ms. Patterson was drawn to the work of the Center for IPE. Her current interests are in transforming the education of pre-health professionals to embed the culture and expectation of collaborative care within each graduate before they enter the health care field.

The impact of introductory experiences on student attitudes about IPE has been demonstrated in a variety of institutional settings and health science professions. The health science schools at the University of Michigan (U-M) have devoted considerable effort towards developing interprofessional education (IPE) offerings administered through the U-M Center for IPE to enable our student learners to learn about, from, and with each other so they are better prepared to achieve the quadruple aims in healthcare. From Inception to Year 5: The Evolution of Interprofessional Education at the University of Michigan
Background: In 2015, the provost and the health science deans committed $6 million over five years to develop an interprofessional health education initiative, including the founding of the Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education (Center for IPE).
